Can I study in Germany for free?

Yes, you can access free education in Germany as an Indian student. However, there are a few restrictions to accessing tuition-free programmes:

  • You must study at a public university
  • Undergraduate and PhD programmes are free, but the only way to study a Master’s in Germany for free is consistency in education. For example, if you have completed B Tech in IT, you need to pursue courses related to IT.
  • You need to have good academic and language achievements.

The specific documentation will depend on the university and program. Common documents required include -

  • Completed “German National Visa - Student” application form
  • Passport
  • Motivation Letter explaining why you are interested in the program and why you are a suitable candidate.

Tuition Fees in Germany

The tuition fees will depend on the type of German university you attend.

Public universities are free for all undergraduate students. There are no tuition fees even for international students. A small amount of EUR 265 (around INR 23,700) per year must be paid as "administration fee".

A Master’s degree is free only if you have completed your bachelor’s in Germany and your master’s is in the same field of study. PhDs are usually free.

Universities in the Baden-Wurttemberg area require a tuition fee to be paid. The Baden-Wurttemberg area includes the cities of - Stuttgart, Mannheim, Heidelberg, etc. Some universities, such as the University of Stuttgart, give a tuition fee waiver in case of financial hardship. A tuition fees reimbursement might also be given if your financial condition changes after the tuition fees have been paid by you.

Private universities are paid. The average tuition fees in Germany are -

1. Bachelor’s: EUR 10,000 to 15,000 per year

2. Master’s: EUR 10,000 and 20,000 per year
